PETRONAS EXTENDS SCHOLARSHIP TO THAI STUDENTS
Hatyai, Thailand, 26 June 2003 – PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national petroleum corporation, today awarded scholarship to 61 deserving students from various districts of Southern Thailand.Eleven students received scholarship to further their education at PETRONAS’ university, known as Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), in Malaysia. These students, who will be taking courses in Information Technology, Mechanical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, will start their academic session in UTP next month.
Meanwhile, 50 secondary school students received PETRONAS’ minor scholarship awards. These students were chosen from 17 schools in Southern Thailand. They formed the fourth batch of students from this part of Thailand to have received PETRONAS’ scholarship to assist them in their studies. (more…)

PETRONAS, PERTAMINA AND PETROVIETNAM IN JOINT UPSTREAM COOPERATION IN MALAYSIA
PETRONAS today signed a Production Sharing Contract with Pertamina and PetroVietnam to jointly explore for and develop hydrocarbon resources in Block SK305 offshore Sarawak, Malaysia, further enhancing the alliance under the ambit of the Tripartite Cooperation Arrangement between the three ASEAN national oil companies.Under the terms of the PSC, the three parties have formed a joint venture company, PCPP Joint Operating Company (PCPP), to operate the block. PETRONAS Carigali Sdn Bhd, a wholly-owned exploration and production subsidiary of PETRONAS, has a 40 per cent equity in PCPP, while Pertamina and PetroVietnam Investment & Development Company (PIDC), which is a unit of PetroVietnam, have a 30 per cent stake each.
Block SK305 is located in water depth of 150 metres in the Balingian Province offshore Sarawak. Covering an area of about 15,164 square kilometres, the block was previously operated by Shell until 1999. Under the PSC signed today, the operators are required to drill two firm and two optional exploration wells as well as acquire and process new 2D and 3D seismic data on the block. PETRONAS AWARDED EXPLORATION BLOCK IN ETHIOPIA
PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national petroleum corporation, has been awarded the exploration Block G in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, marking its entry into the upstream sector of the African country. The award of the block also paves the way for PETRONAS’ further investment in the African continent.The Production Sharing Agreement (PSA) for the block was signed today in Addis Ababa between PETRONAS and Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines. PETRONAS was represented by its Vice President of Exploration & Production Business Dato’ Shamsul Azhar Abbas, while the Ethiopian Government was represented by Minister of Mines Mohamoud Dirir Ghedi.Block G, which covers an area of 15,356 square kilometres, lies within the Gambela Basin and is located in the western part of Ethiopia. Under the PSA, PETRONAS Carigali Overseas Sdn Bhd (PCOSB), the overseas exploration and production arm of PETRONAS, will conduct geological and geophysical studies on the block, acquire 800 kilometres of 2D seismic data and drill one exploration well during phase one of the block’s exploration stage. PCOSB’s financial commitment for this initial exploration stage is US$5 million. Under the terms of the PSA, PETRONAS will also provide technical training to a group of Ethiopians in Malaysia in the area of upstream operations and related fields.
At the PSA signing ceremony, PETRONAS and the Ministry of Mines also inked a Heads of Agreement (HOA) where PCOSB will conduct geological and geophysical studies on the Ogaden Basin, another gas-prolific area in Ethiopia. The basin covers an area of about 350,000 square kilometres and is known to have considerable gas deposits, including a discovered field with a reserve of 2.7 trillion standard cubic feet that is not part of the area specified in the HOA. The HOA will provide PCOSB exclusive rights to acquire exploration acreage in the basin after the completion of the study. (more…)
