The Prime Minister of Malaysia, the Honourable Dato Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad, today officiated the opening of the Bahrain office of PETRONAS, Malaysia’s national petroleum corporation.
The event, held at the office premises on Level 24 of the National Bank of Bahrain Tower in Manama was also attended by many senior government officials of Bahrain including His Excellency Shaikh Isa bin Ali Al Khalifa, the Minister of Oil as well as several Malaysian Cabinet Ministers and Chief Ministers. Also present was PETRONAS President and Chief Executive Officer Tan Sri Dato’ Mohd Hassan Marican.
The setting up of the PETRONAS office in Bahrain follows the signing of two Exploration and Production Agreements between PETRONAS and Bahrain’s Ministry of Oil for offshore blocks IV and VI, witnessed by Dato’ Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Bahrain Prime Minister His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Salman Al Khalifa in Putrajaya, Malaysia, last November.
The award of the two blocks by the Government of Bahrain is a major breakthrough for PETRONAS in its upstream activities in the Arab Gulf region, one of the focus areas in the corporation’s globalisation strategy. It also stand as a testimony to PETRONAS’ capability, track record and success both in Malaysia and in the global arena.
The PETRONAS Office in Bahrain will house under one roof the PETRONAS Group operating in Bahrain and the region, both in the upstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry, including shipping. The setting up of the office in Manama signifies PETRONAS’ commitment to long term presence and relationship with Bahrain in particular and the region in general.
At the same ceremony, PETRONAS’ subsidiary, Malaysia International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) signed two agreements with The Bakri Energy Group of Saudi Arabia to expand their business activities in the Middle East.
PETRONAS was incorporated on 17 August 1974 and has since grown to become a fully integrated petroleum corporation engaged in a wide spectrum of petroleum activities globally. It currently has business interests in 30 countries.
