PETRONAS is sponsoring Riding For Life 2005 (RFL), a cycling adventure jointly organised by Malaysian AIDS Foundation (MAF) and Action for AIDS Singapore (AFA) to raise funds for and awareness of HIV/AIDS.
As a sponsor, PETRONAS is contributing RM37,000 in terms of petrol vouchers and participation of its own 10 cyclists in RFL. The petrol will be used by support vehicles accompanying all 54 cyclists in RFL.
PETRONAS’ contribution was handed over to the Chairman of MAF, Datin Paduka Marina Mahathir by Encik Ibrahim Marsidi, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of PETRONAS Dagangan Bhd, during the RFL2005’s flag off ceremony held at Menara Kuala Lumpur today. Also present at the ceremony were the Minister of Health, Datuk Dr. Chua Soi Lek.
Organised bi-annually, this year’s RFL will see the cyclists travelling over 600km from Malaysia to Singapore. The eight-day journey begins in Kuala Lumpur on 4 September and ends in Singapore on 11 September. The cyclists will stop at six towns — Temerloh, Tasik Chini, Pekan, Mersing, Kota Tinggi and Desaru — where various activities will be held to raise the awareness on HIV/AIDS amongst the communities in these towns.
PETRONAS has since 1993 been contributing towards MAF’s fund raising efforts such as Malam Amal AIDS, Red Ribbon Gala Dinner and In the Name of Love Campaign, to name a few. Its sponsorship of and participation in RFL is an extension of its support to MAF in its noble efforts to educate Malaysians on HIV/AIDS. What makes the sponsorship more special is the participation of the 10 cyclists from the PETRONAS Penapisan Melaka Sdn Bhd Cycling Club, reflecting the growing commitment to volunteer works among PETRONAS’ employees.
Apart from MAF, PETRONAS has initiated and facilitated various health awareness projects under its community relations programme. Taking a more holistic approach towards enhancing the well being of Malaysians, PETRONAS has been able to contribute more positively to the community by promoting a healthy lifestyle. Partnering with non-profit organisations, PETRONAS has carried out activities to educate the public on illness and substance abuse prevention, counselling and seminars to encourage healthy living.
