We regret to report that part of the roof of two control rooms of the Optimal Complex within the PETRONAS Petroleum Industry Complex in Kertih, Terengganu has been damaged by an exceptionally heavy storm last night. The incident which occurred at about 7.30pm resulted in rain water soaking the Distributed Control System (DCS) in both of the control rooms, requiring the plants within the Optimal Complex to be shut down for safety reasons.
The plants — including an ethylene plant, an ethylene oxide / ethylene glycol plant and a multi-unit derivatives plant — however were not damaged by the storm and no casualty was reported. The incident did not affect the operations of other plants within the PETRONAS Petroleum Industry Complex.Â
Repair works are underway and investigations are being carried out to determine the extent of the damage. The plants will be brought back into operation as soon as repairs are completed.
The ethylene plant is owned by Optimal Olefins (M) Sdn Bhd and produces 600,000 tonnes per anum (tpa) of ethylene and 92,000 tpa of propylene. The ethylene oxide / ethylene glycol plant is owned by Optimal Glycols (M) Sdn Bhd and produces 385,000 tpa of ethylene oxide and 385,000 tpa of ethylene glycol. This plant produces 140,000 tpa of butanol; 60,000 tpa of glycol ethers; 50,000 tpa of butyl acetate; 85,000 tpa of ethanolamines and 85,000 tpa of ethoxylates.
